Java is a general-purpose, secure, robust, object-oriented language developed by Sun Microsystems in 1990. Java is portable which means it follows to write once run anywhere paradigm. Many of the useful application are build on Java and required Java runtime environment. The latest version is Java 14 which was released in March 2020. This tutorial helps you to install Java 14 latest version or Java 11 LTS on macOS Sierra or High Sierra.

Step 1 – Prerequisites

Before starting the installation of Java using this tutorial you must have the following prerequisites

  • Terminal: You must have Mac Terminal access and little knowledge about working with the terminal application. Ao login to your Mac system and open terminal

Step 2 – Install Homebrew Cask

  • I tried different things as suggested on different posts (including Eclipse won't start after installing Mac OS X Yosemite (Mac OS 10.10)): I made sure to use the 64 bits version; I tried to go back to Java 6 (downloaded from Apple website) but then I get a message telling that I need the latest version of Java (Java 8) to install Eclipse.

On Mac systems, Homebrew is the package manager, and Homebrew Cask is the app manager built on top of Homebrew. You Execute command to update brew cache and tap the caskroom/cask.

Step 3 – Install JAVA with Homebrew Cask

After upgrading to yosemite, java 6 jdk is no longer available, remember that jdk 6 for mac osx is a 32-bit application, older eclipse releases needs a 32-bit jvm in order to run properly, a 32-bit application cannot run with a 64-bit jvm like java 7 or 8, so you need to install jdk 6 to run those java applications that needs a 32 bit virtual machine.

  1. Check Available Versions – Use the following commands to view the details about java versions to be install.
  2. Installing Java – Next, install the Java version of your choice using one of the below commands. You can also install both versions if required.

    The installation process may take some time to complete depending on your network speed.

  3. Check Version – Once the installation finished, verify the installed Java version.

Now download jdk-8u241-macosx-x64.dmg of size 254.06 MB which is listed for Mac OS X x64.

To download the file, you need to login to your Oracle account. Create an account, if you do not have account and provide your login credentials.

A Finder window will appear, which containing an icon of an open box and with a name JDK 8 Update 241.pkg.

Double-click on the package icon (JDK 8 Update 241.pkg), and follow the instructions to install it.

  • The Introduction window appears, click on Continue.
  • Note: In certain cases, the Destination Select window may appear. If it appears then select Install for all users of this computer to enable Continue button.
  • Then the Installation Type window appears. Click on Install button.
  • Now a new window appears which says 'Installer is trying to install new software. Type your password to allow this.' Provide your Administrator login and password and click on Install Software.

When the installation process is completed, confirmation windows appears. Click on Close.
